Computing

The use of cutting edge technology enables us to fulfil our school mission in a wide variety of innovative ways.

We embrace the use of technology in all of its forms to enhance learning. We use electronic learning to support all areas of our curriculum in school and to provide access to online platforms, so that e-learning can be incorporated into homework routines.

We provide home/school access to:

  • MyMaths
  • Interactive Resources
  • Minecraft Education edition
  • Espresso Coding

and our website contains links to a variety of online learning resources.

Our school is very well equipped with technological hardware and software, to facilitate e-learning  across the curriculum. Our Computing suite is multi-platform, resourced with i-Macs that can also be booted in Windows mode, so that we are able to combine the multimedia potential of Apple's operating system with the tried and tested software that is available on MS Windows.

In every class, you will find:

  • i-Pads
  • Visualisers enabling good examples of children's learning to be shared with the rest of the class
  • Whiteboards and projectors
  • Additional iMacs are available outside of classroom areas too that support children with their intervention activities.

We teach computing through developing children's skills in the multimedia areas of text, graphics, film and sound. We make children aware of the potential to use spreadsheets to streamline mathematical tasks and we develop children's ability to use the internet for purposeful research.

We are tackling the challenge of coding by subscribing to Espresso Coding which provides excellent coverage and progression in coding from Year 1 to 6 and extension activities provided by the highly popular code.org website that is used in schools throughout the world.

Our highest priority is to make children aware of the risks of internet use and social media and equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to stay safe online. During E-Safety week, the whole school takes part in a range of activities promoting safe use of the internet, including class lessons, assemblies and hearing from visiting speakers.

Cultural Capital/Curriculum Enrichment

The Computing curriculum at SFOA gives children the chance to become competent in writing and debugging code, while confidently creating their own games and animations that require many processes to come together. There are also chances across all year groups for film making and editing, photography, producing radio podcasts, animations and producing filmed, persuasive adverts. As Computing subject lead, I strive to assist all teachers in recording such enriching events, editing them and posting them on our social media platforms. These multimedia cross curricular projects serve as evidence of the progress children make in their steps to becoming IT literate in many types of interactive media.
