Patterns

Patterns are all around us. We can see patterns, do things in patterns and even make patterns of our own. During Reception, we focus on learning about repeating patterns. We start by encouraging children to notice simple patterns like children standing in a line boy, girl, boy, girl. This is known as a simple repeating pattern. Once we've cracked that, we can move on more complex patterns such as blue, yellow,  yellow, blue, yellow, yellow, etc. We teach children to first spot the pattern and then talk about how to repeat and continue the pattern.
